Mirage: A Pyrotechnic Display for the Groundbreaking Ceremony of Cai Guo-Qiang Contemporary Art Center.
On the eve of December 8, 2023, prior to the groundbreaking ceremony of the Cai Guo-Qiang Contemporary Art Center (CGQ Art Center), a mesmerizing art performance unfolded in the night sky above Quanzhou. Cai Guo-Qiang, a renowned Chinese contemporary artist with global influence, collaborated with EFYI to create this extraordinary spectacle: Mirage: A Pyrotechnic Display for the Groundbreaking Ceremony of Cai Guo-Qiang Contemporary Art Center.

Between the sea and the heavens, above the ancient city of Quanzhou, twin towers formed by 900 drones emerged from the direction of Quanzhou’s historic twin pagodas, traversing a 2-kilometer-wide strait. This "Eastward Transmission of Twin Towers" flew toward the CGQ Art Center, creating a breathtaking "mirage" that echoed the millennia-old pagodas, bridging time and space in homage to history. Subsequently, 1,100 drones transformed into twin towers embodying the 1,100-year history of the ancient city, and ascended to the sky above the Art Center. As the drone towers ignited layers of silver fountain fireworks from the bottom up, they morphed into two luminous, crystalline towers of light. Then, the bases of the towers erupted with waterfall fireworks, and the drone formations transformed from "ancient pagodas" into "space rockets," soaring toward the cosmos. During their return journey, the drones transformed the night sky into a canvas of science fiction and fantasy, creating a meteor shower that cascaded back to Earth, symbolizing hope and origin, and returning to their starting point.
This drone performance was a groundbreaking achievement in the field of large-scale, multi-type heterogeneous drone systems, executed across a long-distance sea crossing under complex environmental conditions. The collaborative heterogeneous flight placed extremely high demands on the drone ground station communication system, while the long-distance cross-sea flight in complex environments marked a significant breakthrough in drone performance technology.
The performance premiered the Dual-Ignition Firework Control Technology for Drones, which achieved a breakthrough in immersive audiovisual impact, allowing audiences to experience the resonance of technology and art firsthand. It painted a vivid, three-dimensional artistic portrait of Quanzhou’s cultural heritage for guests and viewers, merging history with the future.
